When asked "what do you teach?", a teacher typically answers, "I teach math, or science, or social studies, etc."Sadly, although we are in the 21st century, teachers tend to give the same answer even today. This has done little to redefine and reinvent the teaching-learning process as per findings in the field of brain science.This has also led to prolonged ineffectiveness in global education practices. While the whole world is changing and progressing, the practice of education is either stagnant, or in some cases, regressing.We, educators and teachers, need a paradigm shift, and we need it NOW !Instead of thinking we are teaching different subjects (subject-centric teaching), or teaching students (student-centric teaching), teachers need to realize that they are teaching the brain (learning-centric teaching).For ages, we have attributed students' failures to a wide range of factors, including lack of motivation, lack of parental involvement, low esteem, lack of resources, and many more reasons. We spend a lot of time researching these factors and recommending solutions to remedy them.However, we have failed to address the most important factor; as a matter of fact, the sole, most responsible factor that accounts for any learning – i.e., the BRAIN, which is RESPONSIBLE for the very act of learning.Teachers need to realize that optimum learning is only possible when students fully understand how their brains work in the process of learning. This includes knowledge about the brain's anatomy and physiology, as well as the dynamic actions and reactions that transpire while learning takes place.
