Impunity Watch is an international non-profit organisation, seeking to promote accountability for past atrocities in countries emerging from a violent past. We produce research-based policy advice, monitor state compliance with international obligations and advocate for tailored policy solutions. As well as promoting an integrated approach to addressing violence and impunity, our aim is to assist national civil society groups and communities affected by violence to have a stronger voice in policymaking on tackling impunity and dealing with the past. Our approach is based upon three core strategies: Systematic and comparative research into the root causes of impunity and obstacles to its reduction; Stimulating the creation of bottom-up and complementary transformative justice initiatives, using audio-visual experiences of transitional justice from affected communities and local actors as a basis for international knowledge-sharing for local strategy building; and Lobbying with key actors for the uptake of research-based policy advice on processes of truth, justice, reparations and non-recurrence. It is our conviction that genuine societal transformation after violence must transcend a narrow focus on particular mechanisms alone, eschew one-size-fits-all approaches, and instead facilitate genuine local involvement in an integrated approach to dealing with violence and abuse. Our research and projects therefore employ a bottom-up rationale, prioritising grassroots insight to create practical and targeted policies that genuinely respond to local needs and concerns.
