Independent Girls, Inc. is a new non-profit organization whose mission is to educate and empower 9 - 15 year old girls to set goals, think for themselves, and have high self-esteem by introducing them to real and positive role models that they can emulate to achieve truly successful, independent lives. The main tool for doing this is a website, www.independentgirls.org (to be launched late fall of 2009). Each week the site will feature a different role model for girls as well as an article related to positive, healthy girls' development -- things like self-esteem, financial independence, healthy body images, cliques and popularity, understanding eating disorders, debunking celebrity, etc. The site will send regularly scheduled e-mails to girls and parents who subscribe.Independent Girls aims to create a counterbalance to the celebrity-saturated, image-based culture of 9 – 15 year old girls and to give girls the tools to break free from the limiting and harmful myths promoted by the media that women's success is about looks rather than substance.
