Food Production - Kaduna, Kaduna, Nigeria
Northern Nigeria is blessed with a wide variety of food crops, the majority of which remain underutilized. Some of these food crops include a group of grains known as ‘lost/neglected grains of Africa', so-called because they are predominantly cultivated in Africa (including northern Nigeria), but are not adequately utilized due to overdependence on maize and wheat. At Indigi Foods, we produce a variety of healthy and nutritious plant-based consumables using these underutilized indigenous grains. Our goals are: to improve the acceptability of these neglected grains; up-scale their mass consumption, thus opening vast new markets for farmers; improving rural economies, and curbing malnutrition in Nigeria and Africa. Two of the Indigenous grains we use are Finger millet and Fonio millet. Aside from their nutritious benefits, these special grains have been proven to have low carbon and water foot print; are resistant to drought; and exhibit high yield potential, compared to maize and wheat. Nutrition analysis has also shown that these grains are high in Iron, Calcium, Zinc and some important micronutrients. These grains have also been shown to have a low glycemic index, so they are really important for preventing and managing diabetes. They are also high in antioxidants and gluten-free.We recently launched our flagship product, Tamba Mix, an organic food powder made from these power-packed grains. We plan to increase our range of products to include biscuits, noodles, cake, bread, and healthy snacks. In doing this, we would be working closely with the farmers of these indigenous grains to improve yield and help them learn better farm practices. We aim to empower farmers, create jobs (in manufacturing and sales of our range of products), boost the economy, promote healthy living, and maintain biodiversity. Our vision is a Nigeria where people eat healthy food that is not imported but produced in a sustainable manner right here in Nigeria.
