The Integrated Network for Energy from Salinity Gradient Power (INES) project is designed and coordinated by IMIEU in order to enhance the development of salinity gradient power and the visibility of this innovative renewable energy production technique. INES's purpose is to try to find and develop solutions to the common issues identified as key factors to the upscaling in the sector including fouling of membranes and stacks, investigating financing possibilities for pilots and demonstration projects, solutions for water pre-treatment, ecological aspects and permitting of larger installations. Advantages of INES:- Greenhouse gas reduction (SGP does generate electricity without any associated emissions of greenhouse gases or pollutants)- Power system flexibility (Can operate continuously, without being affected by unpredictable recourse variations, such as wind or solar energy that have requirements for back-up generation capacities)- Minimal impact on aquatic environment and other natural systems - The existence of vast areas of salt beds around the world that could be used to generate brine- The SGP installations tend low and compact in the landscape (better than wind installations)
