Publishing - Detroit, Michigan, United States
∞ mile (infinite mile) was a journal of art and cultures in Detroit that published monthly online issues from December 2013-November 2016 and annual print anthologies designed by local designers. ∞ mile published articles and artist projects from Detroit at a time when the city underwent the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The journal logo rotated the 8 in 8 Mile, the main dividing line between the poor and majority-African American City of Detroit and the wealthier and whiter Metro Detroit suburbs, to create the symbol of infinity, which is impossible to divide.Almost all the contributors of ∞ mile spent a significant amount of time in Detroit and work in the art and cultural community. Through reviews, interviews, articles, writings, artist projects and photo essays, ∞ mile fostered critical discourse in support of art and culture in Detroit. Inflecting on Detroit and its nuanced, experimental and diverse art scene, ∞ mile sought to proliferate and formalize discussions and critique. Over three years, ∞ mile published 94 essays and interviews, 51 artist projects, 26 reviews, 27 works of fiction or poetry, involving 78 contributors. To cover topics beyond the scope of single articles or artist projects, ∞ mile partnered with the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design to organize two serial publications and a conference on Art & Race in 2016.
