At InPRO Medical we are developing advanced bedsore (pressure ulcer) prevention technology that helps patients with limited mobility improve their quality of life. Our solution includes risk assessment software and wearable devices for hospitals, nursing homes, and homecare health providers that monitors risk continuously and recommends the best course of action to caretakers.Bedsores is an acquired condition affecting almost 2.5 million patients in the U.S. every year. They develop in localized areas of the skin exposed to prolonged pressure combined with skin shear usually in patients with limited mobility confined to a bed or wheelchair. Bedsores can be painful, cause discomfort and lead to social isolation, extended hospital stays, and interfere with patient recovery, all of which affect a patient's quality of life. Infected bedsores can also lead to sepsis and death. According to the National Pressure Advisory Panel, bedsore incidence rates vary from as low as 2% to as high as 32% across different clinical settings, are more likely to affect older patients, and is expected to rise sharply in the next 25 years as the population ages. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reports that this condition alone costs the U.S. healthcare system between $9.1 to $11.6 billion per year, with the cost of individual patient case ranging from $20,900 to $151,700 per bedsore. More than 17,000 related lawsuits are filed each year and is the second most common claim after wrongful death. Every year about 60,000 patients die as a result of bedsores.
