The mission of Center for Network Medicine (CNetMed), is to innovate disruptive research to enhance the quality of human health. Headquartered in UC San Diego's Health Sciences, CNetMed is a consortium of UC San Diego's Skaggs School of Pharmacy, School of Medicine, Division of Biological Sciences, and Jacobs School of Engineering striving towards a goal of understanding the fundamental principles that allow eukaryotic cells to interact. It is hypothesized that these cells do so through an ad hoc molecular interaction network, similar to those used in the layered communication systems of the engineering world, spurring the concept of the Internet of Cells (IoC). Success in decoding the fundamental rules of the IoC would provide the ability to stimulate and predict cell behavior, ushering new network-based diagnostic tools and network-resetting therapeutics for major diseases. In addition, knowing how a cell autonomously carries out its business will provide insights into designing new kinds of self-organizing networks and provide a novel paradigm for developing Artificial Intelligence (AI). CNetMed's vision is to support a drug discovery program focused on precision, personalization, and predictability to tackle the biggest challenges of our times and is organized to foster these three types of research initiatives at the nexus of biology medicine and engineering: 1) The Boolean Lab ; 2) The HUMANOID CoRE; 3) The Bio-Inspired Machine-Learning Lab (BIML).
