Organizational design will no longer be a lines and boxes exercise. Executives will take on redesigns every 2-3 years for the forseable future. There is not enough skilled talent to support these efforts in being successful. It will be something that anyone can learn and practically apply. It will no longer be something that only top tier consulting firms mysteriously "do" to organizations closed in a room with a few executives and hand off a 200 page document with an operating model and design that cannot be implemented. The truth has been that most redesigns fail. Some barely even start.Organizational Design done well leaves transformation in its wake. It's a third science, a third art and the other third is emergent magic that no one can predict. Organizational Design changes the way work gets done by people. It is NOT reorganizing deck chairs on a ship. Design is constantly adapting and never static and cultures of organizations should be built to support agility. The consultant or leader of the change is the transformer and must prepare him/herself to be the container and igniter for change in the organization. This requires great self awareness, energy, personal development and courage.Organizational Design is a skill that every executive must know well enough to know how to hire the best to guide them. It is a skill that consultants must master and that HR business partners must learn to identify, be able to explain it's value to leaders, and help transition workforces through significant changes in the way work gets done.
