Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics is the science of creating new and improved plant varieties that are higher yielding, more disease resistant, more nutritious, or simply of greater ornamental value. The Institute faculty actively engage in training of graduate students, the development of new crop varieties, and basic research on the genetics and understanding of crop traits important to agriculture and human kind. The Institute has a strong philosophy that modern plant breeding should be integrated with modern genomics and biotechnology to achieve maximum efficiency. The Institute offers a Master's degree and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Plant Breeding, Genetics & Genomics. Interested students can apply for admission through the Institute. An overall core curriculum for each degree ensures broad training, while providing the flexibility to emphasize topical areas of greatest interest to individual students. Each student will conduct their thesis or dissertation work under the supervision of his/her major professor and an advisory committee. Our mission is to develop improved plant cultivars from agronomic and horticultural species of importance to Georgia, the U.S., and worldwide. Institute faculty train graduate students in modern plant breeding methods and conduct basic research on the genetics of crop traits important to agriculture and human kind.
