The Indonesian Tsunami, the earthquake in Pakistan and Haiti, the floods in Bangladesh and Pakistan, the hurricanes and tornadoes in the United States; a noticeable trend has emerged over the years following every large-scale natural disaster. It appears that donated clothing that is used as clothing-aid does more harm than good. Time and again it has been reported that donated clothing has clogged-up response at airports, ports and roadways while leaving a large carbon footprint getting transported over long distances. Once it reaches the disaster-struck area, it is often found to be culturally inappropriate, climatically unsuitable, and often difficult to sort and distribute. After iterative consultations with end users of clothing-aid, namely the survivors and relief workers, we designed and created a clothing-aid product. The "Survival Plus" Clothing-aid is a one-size fits all multi-functional product that converts easily into a mat, a shawl or a blanket. It is wind and waterproof and several safety features are incorporated in its design. People of all abilities, the elderly, expectant mothers and the injured can use it. The fact that it comes flat packed in its own reusable bag, facilitates its transport and distribution, and offers survivors storage for their personal items. There are several applications for this exceptional product- it is ideal not only for natural disaster survivors, but also for refugees and the homeless.
