Employee integrity is an integral part of any successful business and should be inculcated throughout the corporate environment. Despite this, crime – especially fraud – is prevalent in South Africa to such an extent that South Africa has been listed by several international surveys as among the top countries worldwide with the highest occurrence and probability of economic fraud. Although pre-employment screening or background screening is becoming recognised worldwide as an invaluable tool in the recruitment process, referring only to criminal and credit record enquiries, is a step in the right direction, on its own it is insufficient to mitigate human risk and other forms of dysfunctional behaviour. Thus background profiling with only criminal and credit record enquiries are insufficient to mitigate human risk. Employers should do more to assess the levels of integrity in pre- and post employment. A more holistic and in-depth process is necessary in order to truly assess the integrity of a person and, at the same time, to comply with legal and other regulatory requirements. It is therefore imperative that any corporate institution should have a human risk mitigation strategy by which both pre- and post-employment integrity assessments are conducted with consistency and objectivity.
