Renewables & Environment - Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
IWECON is South Africa's first local manufacturer of multi megawatt wind turbines, with a focus on the use of local content and skills & know-how development in the South African wind energy industry. Over the past decade, IWECON has been actively identifying and developing co-operation with local partners with the capabilities of developing, manufacturing, executing and delivering components at internationally required standards. In addition to tower, blade and casting manufacturing, local content can be achieved in mechanical, electromechanical, hydraulic, electric and electronic components. IWECON manufactured wind turbines and casting components are internationally certified. IWECON is pleased to offer local operation, service and maintenance to it's customers.WIND TURBINE MANUFACTURING: IWECON currently holds a license for the 2.5 MW aeroMaster. To date IWECON has focused on developing it's manufacturing capabilities in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape, and is in the process of establishing it's rotor blade manufacturing facility with attached training centre for composite materials. IWECON has achieved manufactured local content* of over 50% and aims on increasing it's local content to 85% by the end of Phase 1 (manufacturing capability of 100 units/annum).*local content values exclude foundationCOMPONENT MANUFACTURING: IWECON is establishing the basis of it's manufacturing capabilities for casting components, specifically for ROTOR HUBS and MAIN FRAMES, with the intention of delivering high quality, internationally certified casting components and thus offering the advantage of increased local content through locally manufactured components for turbines imported to South Africa (DTI condition). IWECON's feasibility study has shown that it can manufacture casting components locally with costs comparative to China.
