Europe counts at present 6417 Mosque's and other Islamic prayer areas.At the moment Leon van Rijswijk is the only specialized designer of Islamic Gardens in Europe.I, Leon van Rijswijk, believe that with landscaping gardens around Mosque's we can build a bridge between two cultures. As Europeans we ponder in gardens of all kind of styles. With a traditional Islamic Garden we can meet the other culture and start understanding each other. The general theme of a traditional Islamic garden is water and shade, not surprisingly since Islam came from and is generally spread in such a hot and arid climate. Four water canals typically carry water into a central pool or fountain, the four streams symbolizing the four main elements of life. The four streams may also be interpreted as the four rivers in paradise, filled with milk, honey, wine and water.The Islamic Garden is often related to belief but the true Islamic Gardens are all about, unlike the great gardens in the English tradition, not so much places for walking in, as places of rest and quiet contemplation hence the need for a place to sit is also an important consideration. The aim is to strive towards spiritual and physical refreshment.Islamic Gardens are a place of retreat, shelter, abode, away from the tensions of everyday existence.
