International Society of Minimally Invasive and Virtual Surgery was founded in July 2013 at the gala of the 1st Yangtze International Summit of Minimally Invasive and Noninvasive Medicine in Chongqing, China. ISMIVS envisions to accelerating progress in minimally invasive and noninvasive medicine by promoting research, education, communication, and international collaboration.The purpose of ISMIVS is to promote and to develop the highest standards of clinical practice in the field of minimally invasive and noninvasive therapeutic medicine through education and research, under the guidance of the ideology of minimally-invasive and noninvasive medicine, i.e. "the disease that harms the body requires treatment methods that harm less."The Society seeks to provide physicians and allied health scientists and technologists with scientific and educational programs and materials of the highest quality, and to constantly improve the content and value of these scientific and educational activities.The Society seeks to promote research in all aspects of minimally-invasive and noninvasive medicine and related sciences, including clinical research in the promotion of quality and personalized healthcare. The Society seeks to foster closer fellowship among all members in the different branches of minimally-invasive and noninvasive medicine and greater cooperation among all members and allied healthcare professionals.The ideology ISMIVS follows is that articulated by Sir William Osler "the disease that harms the body requires treatment methods that harm less". ISMIVS seeks to promote the concept of heath defined by the World Health Organization: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity". The goal of minimally invasive and non-invasive therapeutic medicine, the central program of the Society, is to minimize harm to patients.
