Jacobus Vanderveer House & Museum Details

The circa 1772 Jacobus Vanderveer House is a living history museum that tells the story of a distinguished Dutch-American family, who lent their home to General Henry Knox, George Washington's military commander, during the American Revolution. General Knox used the Vanderveer House as his home and military headquarters during the winter of 1778-79, while commanding an artillery encampment and training academy established by the Continental Army in nearby Pluckemin. The Vanderveer House is the only surviving building associated with the Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment, now considered America's first military training academy and the forerunner of the United States Military Academy at West Point. A National and New Jersey Historic Site, the Jacobus Vanderveer House is located at the heart of the Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area. Visitors can see fully furnished period rooms and exhibits, a collection of artifacts uncovered during the restoration of the kitchen wing, historic documents and books in The Prich Matthews History Center, and an award-winning video, "In Quarters Comfortable and Clever: The Continental Artillery, Pluckemin, New Jersey 1778-79," depicting what the Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment looked like during General Knox's command. The Jacobus Vanderveer House is open for guided tours on the second Sunday of every month as well as for special presentations, lectures and programs featuring re-enactors, artists, authors and Colonial craftspeople. Our annual Colonial Christmas fundraiser welcomes a growing number of visitors each year. Throughout the year, we offer numerous programs appropriate for school and scouting groups (onsite and in the classroom).Since 1998, The Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House have restored, developed and operated the historic site as an educational and community resource. Members play a vital role in fulfilling that mission and preserving a valuable piece of America's heritage.
