Empowering People. Building Community. Longstanding partnerships in Jamaica enable Jamaican Self-Help (JSH) to work towards the goal of empowering people and building community to break the cycle of poverty and injustice. To achieve our vision, JSH will support both community development and individual growth, with a focus on youth and intergenerational involvement in Jamaica and in Canada. In Jamaica, we work with our partners to empower students and adults by supporting basic education programmes they most need to succeed: literacy and numeracy, trade skills training, parenting counselling and support. Our programmes develop a sense of efficacy particularly among children and youth. JSH builds community through supporting music, sports and clubs for children to have a creative outlet for their energy and passion. These activities bring communities together, fostering pride and hope for the future. We facilitate networking opportunities among partner organizations in Jamaica, and between Canadians and Jamaicans, to share ideas, and work together to find solutions to common problems. A charitable Canadian international development organization, JSH is based in Peterborough, Ontario. JSH supports education and community development projects in Jamaica, and organizes global education activities in the Peterborough and Ottawa regions. In Jamaica, JSH currently supports 5 projects in the capital city of Kingston with a focus on education, children and youth. In Canada, JSH relies on a strong volunteer base to carry out its educational and fundraising activities. JSH has 2 permanent staff and a Board of Directors of 15 volunteers. JSH is funded through individual and group donors, foundations and grants, special events and other fundraising activities. JSH welcomes new donors and volunteers.
