Founded by the biologist Daniela De Donno Mannini in December 1998 as the Italian branch of the Jane Goodall Institute International (JGI) set up by the renowned primatologist Jane Goodall. JGI Italia is a nonprofit organization that aims at empowering people to make a difference for all living things (people, animals, environment) following Dr. Jane Goodall's scientific work and humanitarian vision. Specifically, the JGI Italia seeks to: * Improve national understanding on environmental education, animal protection (having particular regard to chimpanzees as a symbol of those animal species that are threatened by extinction) and natural resources management through research, public education and advocacy; * Contribute to a mindful long-term global development, based on equal distribution of resources and environment-friendly choices; * Protect and enhance biologic and cultural diversities; * Support young people in developing greater critical conscience, individual engagement, self-confidence and hope in the future * Promote sustainable projects in Italy and Africa ( International cooperation to development in Tanzania, having particular regard to orphans because of AIDS) * Raise awareness on the importance of environmental and humanitarian education towards children and young people up to university participating to the international program Roots&Shoots. * Create a national network of young people who have learned to care deeply for their human community, for all animals and for the environment, and who will take responsible action to care for them
