Sports - Brick, New Jersey, United States
In 2006, the Brick Whalers were established as a 96's spring/summer tournament team which focused on player development through on ice clinics conducted by highly experienced/skilled coaches and competing in tournaments at the team's proper skill level. In 2012 the program was expanded to spring/summer tournament teams at the Midget and Junior levels. In 2013, the program transitioned into a full season club, sanctioned by USA Hockey as an Independent organization re-branding as the Jersey Shore Whalers. In their inaugural season the Whalers fielded an 18U team playing a competitive schedule against opponents at the AA, AAA, and Junior levels from the NJ, NY, PA, CT, MA and NH areas. With the success of the Midget 18U inaugural season, along with the demographics of the area and the operation of the organization, the Whalers felt strongly that they would provide a successful environment for Junior hockey. In 2014, the organization was approved by the USA Hockey Junior Council, and accepted into the USP3 Division (formerly the Empire Division), of the United States Premier Hockey League. For the 2015 season, the Whalers revamped their 18U program, to serve as a feeder program that will give players just coming into juniors a way to develop and prepare for the speed, skill, and physicality of junior hockey. By working side-by-side with the junior program, the transition into the lineup when called upon would be a seamless one. During the season, the 18U team attended several USPHL Showcases and events along with the junior team. In 2016, after two successful seasons in USP3 at the junior level along with the competitiveness the 18U team showed at the USPHL Showcases, the USPHL awarded the Whalers additional teams at the 16 Futures, 16U and 18U levels for the 2016-2017 season.
