JNI SmartGlass offers switchable privacy glass for interior/exterior architectural laminated windows. Our electrically switchable smart glass utilize polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) technology to control light transmission. You are probably familiar with liquid crystals, which are found in many of the products you use every day. Portable computers, calculators, digital clocks and watches all use liquid crystal displays (LCDs). In these displays, electricity is used to change the shape of the liquid crystals to allow light to pass through, thus forming figures and numbers on the display. The technology behind an LCD is similar to the polymer dispersed liquid crystals used in JNI SmartGlass switchable windows. In our windows, an electrically responsive smart window film is laminated into the glazing. People often think these windows are electrically tinted glass. The film does contain liquid crystals which do react to an electrical charge. However, by applying electricity the liquid crystals align parallel to one another and let light through. When the electrical charge is absent from the laminated glazing, the liquid crystals in these smart windows become randomly oriented blocking light transmission or tinting the glazing. With liquid crystals, the glass is either clear or translucent. Different voltages can create altered tinting amounts providing a dimmable glass effect. Other effects like a transition from translucent to clear within the same window are also possible.Electrically switchable privacy glass has a varied list of applications from residential, commercial office, healthcare and government buildings to automotive, marine and recreational vehicles.Visit the JNI SmartGlass website for photos of some applications as well as an opportunity to download our brochure.
