The Joel Schwartz Memorial Hockey Tournament (JSMHT) presented by RioCan held its 5th annual hockey tournament fundraiser on March 29, 2015 at the Chesswood Arena, raising $200,000. The JSMHT is in honour of Joel Schwartz, a Reena client who passed away on March 3, 2009, just two months after participating on a CIE Birthright Israel trip with support from a Reena shadow. Reena Foundation funds the "Reena Birthright Shadow Program" that allowed Joel to experience this trip just like any other person without a disability would. The event contributes 100% of the proceeds to support Reena Foundation, a non-profit social service agency dedicated to integrating people with developmental disabilities into the community. The inaugural Joel Schwartz Memorial Hockey Tournament took place on March 13, 2011, featuring 12 teams that raised over $100,000. Over the last 4 years, the tournament has gone onto raise an unprecedented $625,000. The proceeds from the tournament support the Joel Schwartz Endowment Fund that provides funding for innovative and inclusive programming opportunities which aim to integrate Reena clients into the community.
