With over 30 years' experience, John Musumeci Optometrist provides excellent patient care with early diagnosis and treatment. John's interest in optometry began at a young age when he was diagnosed with a "lazy" eye. From that time, he has been fascinated with the whole eye examination process and how glasses worked in improving vision. John received his Bachelor of Optometry degree from the University of New South Wales with Honours Class 1 in 1985 and commenced private practice in Fairfield. Ever since his graduation, he has enhanced his expertise in eye examinations, vision correction, spectacle & contact lens dispensing and ocular disease detection & management. He continued his studies to receive a Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics and he is currently studying his Master of Optometry at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at UNSW. Over the past 15 years, he has developed a specific interest in the detection, diagnosis and management of eye disease, particularly retinal pathology (age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular dystrophies, retinal occlusions), glaucoma, ocular inflammation & infection and dry eye disease. To achieve this, he has incorporated technologies such as a retinal imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT, which provides a detailed optical biopsy of the anterior & posterior eye), automated visual field testing, corneal topography, tonometry, pachymetry and colorimetry enabling comprehensive eye examinations, early detection & treatment of vision problems & eye disease. This ultimately leads to better long-term visual outcomes. It also allows him to liaise with his patient's general practitioner and specialists in the management of complex ocular disease with a systemic involvement (hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and auto-immune diseases).
