Established in 1961, the Johns Hopkins Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is home to the nation's first training program in the field. Consistently ranked the #1 BME department in the country, our mission is to advance human health by training biomedical engineers who will lead the field through scientific discovery, translational research, and innovation that transforms healthcare delivery at scale. Our unique position within the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Whiting School of Engineering promotes close collaborations with world-class clinicians, scientists, engineers, and industry leaders. Through these partnerships, we are committed to developing the next generation of transformative medical technologies and delivering these technologies to patients worldwide. Our faculty are defining the field of biomedical engineering, pioneering new disciplines that have immense potential to improve the lives of patients around the globe. Our undergraduate, master's, and PhD students are practicing engineers, solving real healthcare and engineering challenges through project-based courses, research, design projects, and other opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and innovation.
