Founded in Madison in 2005, and closed in 2016, Jonk Music was a daily source for new music. As a University of Wisconsin student (now alumnus) and lover of all things indie music, Jon Kjarsgaard set out to create a site that covered both local and national bands from a grounded perspective. Diligent postings included "a new song daily," summer mixtapes, and nuanced year-end lists led to increased readership and, in 2012, Jonk Music introduced a Madison page to its lineup. The Madison section originated from an interest not only in covering local and national releases but in expanding to feature local concerts as well. Jonk Music interviewed numerous visiting acts including Animal Collective, Delta Spirit, Dirty Projectors, Local Natives, and Andrew W.K. Through dedicated team members and creative leadership, the site grew steadily with a core idea: Madison is an awesome place for independent music and its scene deserves meticulous, tasteful coverage.
