Journey to Justice was created to galvanise people to take action for social justice by learning about human rights movements and the arts. We are a national human rights charity with supporters all over the UK. ‘We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.'(Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.).Dr. King's belief that our lives are interrelated and his call for solidarity, is a message for us all. True race equality is still a dream and the US civil rights movement remains a universal symbol for people fighting for social justice anywhere. We created a multi-media interactive mobile exhibition focused on the US civil rights movement, telling stories of 'ordinary' men, women and children involved, who did extraordinary things. The exhibition and related activities examine key events, themes and tactics, demonstrating what leads people to become and stay active in campaigns. As the exhibition travelled, we partnered with local communities, telling local 'less told stories from UK history - the struggle for civil liberties and freedoms. Using arts and intergenerational activities, we show how change for social justice can happen led by ‘people like us'. The exhibition programme has been to fifteen places and we are now looking for a permanent home for it as well as creating an online version of it, with the help of a design agency, Surface Impression.Our new project is focused on economic justice in the UK, telling stories of people who have challenged economic injustice, talking about non-violent tactics and interviews with 'explainers' who outline the causes of inequality in the UK.
