Vast cuts to legal aid brought about by the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act (LASPO) in 2012 has forced many people with insufficient legal knowledge to represent themselves in court. This new wave of litigants in person (LiPs) who are priced out of representation not only have unfair access to justice, but also put strain on the court through their disorganisation and misunderstanding of law. Our solution to the problems caused by the legal aid cut is JustEase, an accessible digital legal companion in the form of a smartphone application. We want to create JustEase to alleviate the pressure on both the LiPs and the Ministry of Justice by guiding and supporting litigants through the procedural process of their legal journey.
