Civic & Social Organization - Evanston, Illinois, United States
Now in our 31st year, the Justin Wynn Fund (JWF) celebrates, honors and guides youth leaders of Evanston. Our mission is to celebrate and nurture youth leaders by helping them develop a deep sense of self and responsibility for improving their communities. Our vision is to create leaders who improve their communities and inspire those around them to do the same. Each spring, the Justin Wynn Fund honors two fourth graders from each of District 65′s twelve elementary schools. Approximately 300 Evanstonians attend the celebration banquet that recognizes the young students (known as Wynners). Starting with the first class of Wynners in 1988, more than 500 students have received the Justin Wynn Award and all have played a role in celebrating Justin's legacy. Each of the fourth grade honorees may choose to participate in the Justin Wynn Leadership Academy (a community service based leadership program). The Fund was created in 1987 when Justin Wynn died in an accident at the age of 9. Though just beginning his life, Justin exemplified the qualities of leadership, citizenship and sportsmanship. Through Justin's tragic death, we have been inspired to sustain and encourage many of Evanston's youth, a diverse group of fourth through twelfth graders who are brimming with potential as future leaders.
