Karya Inc is an early stage social enterprise startup that originated from a project at Microsoft Research India. The mission of Karya Inc is to enable access to dignified work to all people wherever they are. Access to work is a key step in mitigating poverty. To this end, our target is currently on users in low-income communities, particularly in rural communities in India.Our focus is currently on digital work. With a global push toward a digital future, there is a massive amount of digital work available in the form of data annotation, labelling, and enrichment. We envision significant amount of work particularly surrounding local language technologies. While users in rural India are skilled enough to complete these tasks, there are a number of issues surrounding awareness, connectivity, and payments that make this work inaccessible to rural users.We have designed and built an inclusive and accessible crowdsourcing platform that makes minimal assumptions about our target users. Our research shows that users need little to no training to complete a variety of digital tasks with high quality. With proper outreach, we aim to impact a large number of users by providing them access to supplemental income and opportunities to upskill themselves, thereby enabling upward social and economic mobility.
