Keep Me Informed | Medicines (KMI) is a service that enables members of the public to identify conditions and medicines that they are interested in. Through the tracking and authoring processes used by KMI, we notify members of the public that there is new, published information, about their choices. The type of information KMI identifies falls into three categories:• Information about new medicines and new information about existing medicines – new MAs, variations etc.• Patient safety updates – usually safety changes to package inserts, warnings, contraindications etc. These are linked to the specific medicines users select.• Guidance information – particularly TAs from NICE and SMC. We include clinical guidelines and quality standards (e.g. cystic fibrosis) in this group. We place a lot of emphasis on the quality of the sources we use. I was previously responsible for developing the electronic Medicines Compendium and my colleague, Dr Weeks developed the World Standard Drug Database. We understand the issues involved with communicating medicines information and our goal was to provide progressively detailed layers of information for the public. To this end we rely considerably on the published information from NHS Choices, the EMA and NICE.The public, patients, carers and healthcarers can go as deep into the information as they think necessary. One of our goals is to contextualise and connect patients to the workings of NICE so as to exemplify the clinical recommendations their healthcarers work to and the assessment of value for the medicines they may consume.
