Court Appointed Special Advocates or CASA volunteers are everyday citizens appointed by judges to advocate for the safety and well-being of abused and neglected children. They stand up for these children and help change their lives. Last year in Kentucky, more than 700 CASA volunteers advocated for the best interest of over 3,000 children in 42 counties. The mission of the statewide organization (KY CASA) is to present a unified voice for abused and neglected children and to enhance the growth, development and support of local CASA programs throughout the Commonwealth. Kentucky CASA is part of a national volunteer movement. In 1977, a Seattle Superior Court Judge was concerned about trying to make decisions on behalf of abused and neglected children without enough information. He conceived the idea of appointing community volunteers to support follow-up research and to speak up for the best interest of the children in court.Today, CASA has evolved into one of the largest volunteer organizations in the country . At the beginning of 2011, there were 20 CASA programs in Kentucky supervising 812 volunteers who serve 3,000 of the 17,000 abused children reported
