Khula Development Group is a registerednon-profit organisation (NPO) with the mission to promote a positive culture of learning and strengthen the value of education and attendance for children at risk of school disengagement through school, home and community based preventative and restorative initiatives. Khula is active in Paarl (Paarl East) and Stellenbosch (Cloetesville, Idas Valley and Klapmuts) in the Western Cape. Across the country, an estimated (40%) of Grade 1 learners will leave the schooling system before finishing Grade 12 (Zero Dropout Campaign). About 300 000 learners drop out of school each year. The importance of regular school attendance and education is often not recognized. Due to COVID-19, many different social factors and the manifestation of poverty, it is easy for children to start a cycle of school absenteeism.
