Leisure, Travel & Tourism - Moorak, South Australia, Australia
Kilsby Sinkhole is recognised as one of the most significant dive sites in the world. Located in Mount Gambier, the mecca for freshwater diving in Australia, the site is known for its stunning water clarity, creating a unique diving experience, perfect for photography, training and ‘fun diving' activities. The site also has a significant historic value due to its use as research site for the classified testing of ‘Barra Sonobuoys' in the 1970's. During this period, the property was leased to the Federal Government and operated by the Australian Defence Research Centre. Kilsby Sinkhole Developments is a small family run company which has provided a platform for the strategic growth of the sinkhole as a tourism asset for the region since 2014. Through the development of an industry-leading site access framework, the company has successfully trialled a model which allows Open Water certified divers to access entry level sections of the sinkhole through the supervision and guidance of trusted, industry-qualified instructors. As a result of this trial, Kilsby Sinkhole Developments has agreements with 15+ licensees who are building growth in visitation to the site in a responsible and sustainable manner.
