The Knesset Social Guard promotes participatory democracy in two ways. First, our Citizen Monitors hold our government accountable by promoting transparency and freedom of information throughout the legislative process. Second, our value based advocacy strengthens our democracy and the power of the legislative branch (the only directly elected branch of government in Israel).In the wake of 2011's widespread and unprecedented social awakening that swept Israel, Israelis woke up to the power that they can wield if they are active citizens. The Social Guard was launched in order to harness that power and provide a practical way for citizens to engage and participate in Israeli democracy.We aim to improve parliamentary performance, while at the same time empowering Israelis' sense of civic potency. We are unique in bringing a wide spectrum of citizens into direct contact with the Knesset and its processes –their presence and active interest promotes Knesset accountability and transparency.
