Education Management - Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana
The Institute of Sanitation and Waste Management is the result of years of growth in the waste management industry by Zoomlion Ghana, Ltd. Waste management, an immature industry in Ghana and most of West Africa in the late 20th century, was seen as a growth industry as economic diversification brought about new industries, and increased waste production. With economic growth also came increased population growth in key cities and elevated waste production. Growth in industry and population created an unsustainable environmental situation. As with all immature but growing industries, waste management suffered from a lack of understanding. Industry, used to taking shortcuts to maximize profits at the expense of the environment needed to be taught the real costs of their practices. Public policy was lacking and needed guidance. A compounding difficulty was that society, being used to indiscriminate waste disposal, also required education and training. This dearth of educated and informed citizenry required a response if society and industry were to coexist.Zoomlion Ghana, Ltd. founder, Joseph Agyepong, took upon himself the mantle of responsibility to initiate an effort of enlightening people, policy, and industry. The Institute of Sanitation and Waste Management is the vehicle for which research, education, and training of people and industry takes place. While a young institute, it has the benefit of drawing upon research where a century of best practices serves as a foundation to build upon for our nation and region. The Institute looks toward future opportunities created by the nascent oil industry and plans to expand its research focus into chemical waste management. As the Ghanaian economy continues on a path of emergent growth the Institute stands at the ready to assist policy formation through sound research and guide companies in their efforts towards environmental sustainability.
