Nonprofit Organization Management - Kapaau, Hawaii, United States
Kohala Institute at ‘Iole owns and stewards 2300 acres of land, including the ‘Iole ahupua'a, in North Kohala on the island of Hawaii. We offer place-based and experiential learning opportunities to explore the universal values of Gratitude, Respect, Accountability, Courage, and Engagement (GRACE) with the hope of yielding positive connections with our surroundings, with others, and ourselves to make the world a better place.\\Our property offers fascinating sites from the precontact period (lo'i kalo - taro patches), missionary era (Bond Homestead) and plantation era. The majority of our property is licensed to ranchers and farmers and includes Hawaii's largest organic macadamia nut orchard. We host schools, organizations, and businesses with specialized tours and events. \\Our program activities focus on education, culture and the arts, contemplation, and sustainability in the form of land and water management in an ahupua'a, energy security, water security, food security, agriculture, and aquaculture. We also offer weekly classes in yoga, meditation, hula, and lauhala weaving.\\Our public trails are currently closed due to construction activity for the next 9 months. An updated historic trail will be open to the public in July 2015. The historic Kohala Girls School (1874) campus is being transformed into the GRACE Center, an education and meeting center which is scheduled to open in early 2016. The exterior historic buildings will remain but the interior of each building is being renovated to host classes, retreats, conferences, and community events.\\Our energetic staff loves to interact with our new and repeat visitors! We are a diverse group with so much to share!
