Farming - Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana
Kookoo Pa Farmers Association was formed in 2009 as a farmer organization that networks cocoa farmers in Ghana and provides them with knowledge in sustainable agricultural practices to produce cocoa and other agricultural products in a more environmentally sustainable, socially responsible and economically viable way. The organization started with 320 cocoa farmers and has over the years expanded, reaching about 10,000 farmers in 10 cocoa producing districts of Ghana. Its members have since 2010 been certified by UTZ and considered to be the most successful farmer group certification model in Ghana. Kookoo Pa has transformed from a pilot project by Solidaridad West Africa into a fully registered independent farmer development organization with good governance structures (such as Board of Governance, management team, association Executive Committee, extensionists/agronomists and other administrative staff), and efficient quality management system. Kookoo Pa has human resource management and financial management policies that enable it to transparently account to its donors.Since its inception, it has developed business partnerships with Solidaridad, UTZ, Noble Resources, Armajaro, Federated Commodities, Transmar,Cocanect, Belgian Trade Cooperation and World Cocoa Foundation. It currently runs a cocoa certification project with Cocoanect, a Cocoa Livelihoods Project and Digital Green with World Cocoa Foundation. As a farmers' association, it has been visited and studied by many students, research institutions, cocoa companies and international journalists such as National Geographic, Mars, Cargill, Dutch journalists, Oxfam, Royal Tropical Institute and many others. Also, Kookoo Pa was the first Farmer Association to pilot Digital Green in partnership with Solidaridad West Africa in CLP phase I and it is implementing Digital Green in selected communities as part of CLP Phase II.
