Retail - Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands
Kriterion Studentenpomp is the only student-run gas station in the world. It provides part-time employment for approximately 35 students, who each work 12-16 hours a week. The business has a horizontal organizational structure: all employees have identical contracts and primary and secondary working conditions. The employee base is organized into six committees: Safety, Procurement, PR, Human Resources, Administration and Facilities Services. Each committee has one committee head, whom together with an elected chairman make up the board of Kriterion Studentenpomp. All operating income is forwarded to the Kriterion Foundation, of which several other student-run projects in Amsterdam are part. The profits made are invested in projects locally, but also abroad, such as in Monrovia, Liberia, where recently the first student-run cinema opened its door, modeled after the Kriterion cinema in Amsterdam.
