Museums & Institutions - Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Kunstmuseum Bochum is an art institution in the Ruhr area dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Our predecessor, the 'städtische Kunstgalerie', was founded in 1921. We organise exhibitions with contemporary artists and with art from the 20th and 21st centuries and offer various education formats. We are also a meeting point for discussions with and about artists, as well as host for events such as literature and music evenings. The museum consists of two buildings, the Villa Marckhoff and the 'new' building from 1983, designed by the Danish architects Wohlert and Bo. Our diverse collection has been on display in the villa since 2020, including works by Expressionism, an important collection of works by Eastern European artists (including Czech Surrealism, Cubism, post-war tendencies from Poland, etc.), Cobra, Art Brut, conceptual works through to recent acquisitions of contemporary artists like Christiane Feser and Joëlle Tuerlinckx. In the main building, we organise 6 to 8 group and/or solo exhibitions on relevant social and art-historical topics each year.
