The Laboratório de Tecnologia Mineral (LTM) is associated to the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (DMM) of the Polytechnic School (EP) and the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Program (PEMM) of the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Engenharia (COPPE) of UFRJ. LTM conducts teaching activities in undergraduate and postgraduate besides research and development. In addition, LTM also provides services to companies through the COPPETEC Foundation. The LTM occupies an area of 600 m2 in the annex of I Block. It consists of a building, inaugurated in 1998, that is part of the I-2000 complex of high technology laboratories of COPPE. In addition to the laboratory units, the building also has offices, a meeting room, an auditorium and a computer and training room. The LTM Comminution Group is active in the crushing and milling of minerals and cement, with emphasis on the development of mathematical models for simulation, as well as the development of modern tools for characterization of materials, design and optimization of comminution plants research in the mechanosynthesis of alloys and nanostructures of materials.
