Apparel & Fashion - Chicago, Illinois, United States
Liz Mortensen is a Textile Artist based in Chicago, IL. She creates one of a kind textiles that are hand dyed with natural dye. Her unique designs are marked by vivid colors and weird patterns that create one of a kind designs inspired by the world around her. She has taken years to study natural dyes and minerals to learn the science behind natural color. Liz extracts all the dye in her studio from a variety of plants and food waste from local Chicago Restaurants. Liz is passionate about reducing textile waste and promoting slow fashion. She is a creative being who is a lover of many things. When she is not dying fabric she is taking photos, spending time outside, or dreaming of her next DIY project. Laila Textiles was started in Spring of 2018 by Liz as an outlet to promote the movement of slow fashion and to educate others on natural dye. When spending time studying and living in Israel, Liz was introduced to natural dyes and took the time to study them by enrolling in natural dye courses and reading books. She was fascinated by the ancient history of natural dye and inspired by the colorful terrain of Israel. From that time, the idea of Laila Textiles was born. The name "Laila" is inspired by her travels and deep appreciation for the beautiful land of Israel. Liz considers herself a life-long learner and forever on the journey of learning more about natural dyes. Today, Laila Textiles specializes in wearable silk designs that are created in Chicago, IL.
