The game of Lacrosse is a field sport played with a stick, the crosse, which must be mastered by the player to throw, catch and scoop the ball. Originally played with a wooden stick, the equipment has evolved tremendously. Heads are now made of lightweight plastics and/or composites, with lightweight mesh or stringing, and lightweight handles made of tubular aluminum, titanium, or composites. The one thing that has remained constant through the years is the weight of the ball. The ball, according to the rules of the game, must weigh between 5-5.25 ounces (140-150g)Manufacturers have made great strides in eliminating the overall weight of the stick including the head. However the stick is most useful when used with the ball. When the ball is in the head of the stick, overall weight is increased 25-40%. Because the excess weight is placed at the top of the stick in the head, above the hands, the dynamics of the balance point of the stick are changed. The balance point is raised further from the hands lessening control and speed at which a player can move the stick. The only way to bring that balance point back towards the hands is to counterbalance the stick by adding weight to the butt end of the handle. This counterbalance is the lax advantage. The lax advantage is a weighted end cap inserted into the hollow butt end of a lacrosse handle to bring the balance point of the stick back into the controlling part of the stick directly below the upper, or controlling, hand.
