The Virtual Wide Area Network (vWAN) Company. What is a vWAN? vWANs allow multiple wide area networks to be used as one, either in a serial manner (starting a data session on one WAN and, via seamless handoff, finishing on another), or in a parallel manner (taking up to 20 similar or dissimilar network connections, bonding them, aggregating their bandwidth, and using them simultaneously). vWANs provide real-time IP traffic shaping to ensure that priority applications are always assigned to the most appropriate WAN path based on user-definable policies (e.g., lowest link cost, highest application priority), and real-time edge-to-edge measurements of each WAN (e.g., available link bandwidth, current throughput, end-to-end latency, jitter and packet loss). vWANs are created at Layer 2 (usually between IT networks and remote devices/networks) using L2TP tunnels and are thus transparent to existing VLAN traffic. They can be configured to compress and encrypt traffic over the wide area and thus provide a perfect complement to traditional wide area optimization solutions operating at Layers 4-7. vWANs are designed to allow the benefits of today's virtualization trends to be extended over the wide area regardless of the network and data types being used while delivering significant financial savings and performance improvements.
