Online courses are not exactly something new. They have represented a revolution in the educational market for the last 20 years. In some countries such as Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, online courses have opened a new perspective for people that cannot attend a regular on-campus course in a University. In Brazil, nowadays, more than 2 million students are currently enrolled in a distance learning program. However, institutions have not learned yet how to engage these students, and more than 37% of them drop their course yearly. This represents a considerable challenge for cash flow, and it raises the pressure over the recruitment team that needs to attract students in a red ocean where price, mostly, is the unique value proposition. This problem is not isolated. Huge open courses companies such as Coursera have less than 2% of completion rate. The high drop-out rate is a reality in this market. Still, what are the causes that drive students to quit? How do you engage them in their learning process? This is our focus. We, LDM Edtech, are a startup that uses data, artificial intelligence, and modern educational techniques to retain students in online courses. Founded in 2019 by three professionals with a deep understanding of the market, LDM is already providing solutions for institutions such as Ser Educacional Group and Cândido Mendes University. We have developed an interface based on a chatbot that helps students plan their studies. The deliverable is a calendar with sessions of contents where the user can follow avoiding procrastination. Our bot acts as an assistant reminding the student about his/her sessions by e-mail, SMS, and Whatsapp. If the student misses a session, it is not a problem either. The AI is capable of recognizing it and replans the missed content for the following sessions.
