The Learnapalooza festival is a community-building event offering free workshops and classes lead by volunteers and hosted by local businesses. It was founded in 2009 when Sarah Press, founder of a peer learning startup CommuniTeach that helps neighbors learn for free throughout the year, met Maggie Schutz, a fellow Chicagoan who had heard about an event called Learnapalooza DC and wanted to bring the model to Chicago. They teamed up with Brian Bullington, Zach Schneider and several other fantastic volunteers to translate their festival idea into a reality. In its inaugural year, Learnapalooza featured 77 workshops taught at 16 venues and attended by more than 400 Chicagoans – topics included yoga, bee-keeping, dancing, web design, wine-making, guitar, and cooking. The festival continues to grow each year.
