Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) is a national non-profit, volunteer-based organization committed to relieving loneliness and isolation among the elderly. We offer to people of good will the opportunity to join the elderly in friendship and celebration of life. Our motto "Flowers before bread" expresses our belief that love and dignity and beauty in life are as essential as physical needs. At Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, service begins by being a friend.The national headquarters of LBFE is in Chicago, and we currently have independent chapters in seven US locations: Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Philadelphia, San Francisco and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. New York City is currently an expansion site based in Brooklyn. In our first year of operation in 2017, thanks to the support and generosity of over 100 volunteers and several community partners, we have been able to make 1,000 friendly visits to over 200 elderly New Yorkers in need of companionship in Crown Heights, Bed-Stuyvesant, Prospect-Lefferts Garden and the Upper West Side.For eligible recipients who suffer most from social isolation, we currently offer at no charge, a monthly Friendship and Flowers visiting program, Holiday gift basket deliveries 4 times a year (Easter, Mother's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas) and a bi-monthly Friendly Visiting program. For our most vulnerable elderly recipients, we also have a monthly Food Assistance program available. Our aim is to build lifetime friendships with isolated elders in NYC thanks to people of good will who have a heart for seniors. By showing our elderly friends they are seen, remembered, listened to and cared for in their later years, we are able to brighten their lives and to maintain a critical social connection. During our friendly visits, we are not only able to promote inter-generational friendships, but also offer volunteers opportunities to celebrate the lives of isolated elders in our midst and to learn from them.We look forward to expanding our friendly visiting services in Brooklyn and Manhattan in 2018.
