Lokeel.com is a web service that is geographically-based, community oriented, and focused on original news reporting to fill gaps in news coverage and promote civic engagement. Lokeel visually represents local news, community events, and promotions on a map to communicate authentic stories and impressions about day-to-day life in a community. Lokeel is focused on building ties within communities through a bottom up approach in aggregating information. Aggregated information can provide small businesses, NGOs, and all levels of government insights into the effectiveness of economic or social policies, and the ability to drill down to identify key community and local indicators. Development is currently on-going through an open beta. Initial efforts are being placed on geo-coding news from Toronto and the surrounding area. The primary focus for growth is connecting with neighbourhoods and municipalities across Ontario to develop channels for cross functional representation of community information and news. Lokeel is being developed in response to an increasing interest for local information. Individuals are more accustomed to using map-based apps and smartphones when searching for information. Lokeel lets individuals take pride in their community through promoting others, local businesses, and social issues. Underlying the content is a location analytics engine is being built to provide insights on historic, real-time, or future trend discovery. Lokeel maps news with a focus on community engagement, providing an interactive channel for readers to discover relevant content.
