Look at Art. Get Paid. (LAAGP) is a socially engaged art project that pays people who don't visit art museums to visit as guest critics of the art and its institution. As pressure builds for museums to change, it is an enormous challenge to make conversations about the future of museums accessible to individuals who aren't already visiting them — particularly communities of color and working class communities. Free days? They're mostly attended by existing visitors.Created by artists Maia Chao and Josephine Devanbu, LAAGP brings new energy, awareness, and action to conversations about equity in museums by investing in the expertise of those who haven't been served by them, reversing the relationship between the educator and the educated, the paying and the paid. It centers lived experience as expertise and offers community members a seat at the table without asking them to assimilate or donate their time. LAAGP launched at the RISD Museum in 2016 with a project that brought 41 guest critics to the museum. Museum staff there report that LAAGP has renewed urgency and galvanized equity initiatives. LAAGP is now preparing to launch across a cohort of art museums to spark critical dialogue about institutional change and equity in the arts. "It made me feel important—like we're here to see what can be changed about the museum. Our words count. We're going to be heard. I feel like—especially since I was being paid—that helped a lot." — Guest Critic at the RISD Museum
