Since 2009, the GRAMMYnominated Los Angeles Percussion Quartet (LAPQ) has forged a distinct identity as a worldclass contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to commissioning and presenting new works for percussion quartet. LAPQ champions the important contributions of historic West Coast composers while collaborating with local and international artists to continue innovation and exploration. The group broadens their creative output through recordings, performances, and educational outreach. LAPQ's partnership with Sono Luminus Records has contributed some of the most dynamic and realistic recordings of percussion music to date. RūpaKhandha, LAPQ's seminal album, pioneered a new level of sonic achievement as the first 7.1 surroundsound recording of percussion. The album won multiple nominations in the 55th GRAMMY Awards including the prestigious category of Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. In 2014, LAPQ released their second album with Sono Luminus Records entitled The Year Before Yesterday. The album was hailed by the NEW YORK TIMES as "mesmerizing," with "colorful, atmospheric and...supremely melodic music". It was also selected as "Best of Classical Music 2014" from iTunes. LAPQ's performances range in scope from living room salons and warehouses to art museums and distinguished concert halls. Mostly a chamber ensemble, LAPQ has also presented concertos with ensembles such as the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra and collaborations with the Long Beach Opera, WildUP orchestra, and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Equally committed to education, the quartet presents workshops for k12 musicians and holds residencies at universities such as the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, University of Southern California and Stanford University.
