Nonprofit Organization Management - Birmingham, Alabama, United States
The Lotus Family Development Center (Lotus FDC) aims to improve the quality of life of African American families living in the Greater Birmingham area by offering culturally relevant, evidence-based programming that promotes good nutrition, physical activity, and family cohesion. The Lotus FDC concept blossomed from a desire to establish a nurturing, community-integrated source of support for the African American families and residents of Birmingham's under-resourced neighborhoods - support focusing on three distinct but interconnected factors that greatly impact the overall welfare of these communities - Access to Healthy Food & Good Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Social Support. These three factors are addressed by the organization's main program areas: #TeamFit, Urban Gourmet, Back to Our Roots, Lotus Family Support, and Empowered! Seminars. Examples of program activities include fitness classes for all ages, healthy cooking and nutrition classes, an urban agriculture initiative, parenting support and classes, co-parenting mediation, youth development workshops, and civic engagement efforts. The Lotus Family Development Center aims to foster organic behavior change in community members who participate in its programs and activities. By helping to change the way in which they are able to approach nutrition, physical activity, and interacting with their family and neighbors, the organization hopes to provide these community members with the knowledge and resources they need to improve their quality of life and that of their families and communities.
