The Journal of Health Policy and Economics (JOHPEC) was founded in 2020 by Camile Bou and J.Sam Meyer under the auspices of the Houghton St. Press and sponsored by the Department of Health Policy. The purpose of the JOHPEC was to both encourage students in the Health Policy Department to publish the original papers they have written related to their coursework, as well as assist students in finding opportunities to publish in order to further their future professional and academic pursuits. At the time, there were no other student journals under the auspices of the Houghton St. Press that are dedicated to issues of health policy and economics. Therefore, it was the case that students who were not directly studying these disciplines were unaware of the many contemporary health issues that have serious implications on their wellbeings. Making the research of students in the Health Policy Department accessible to the greater student body allowed students outside of the department to be better informed about critical concepts and contexts affecting their lives. Additionally, the Health Policy Department is dedicated to encouraging their students to think critically and creatively about the healthcare industry around the world, and students in turn rigorously produce research that is nuanced and high-quality. The Journal of Health Policy and Economics thus provided an accredited and reputable avenue to enable students to promote their research individually and the research of the Health Policy Department as a whole.
